Fanfiction – Parallel Pixie

Parallel Pixie by Space Pirate Hamster

Length: 3 Chapters, Vanished/Dropped
Sources: Magical Girl Pretty Sammy?
Rating: 4/5

For those who are interested, I just added Space Pirate Hamster’s Parallel Pixie to the Vanished FanFic Archive. I’m not exactly familiar with the source series, but as I understand it, it’s protagonist and friends are gender-swapped versions of the antagonist from Magical Girl Pretty Sammy. It doesn’t really matter much since the portions which appear to have been borrowed are very generic.

Space Pirate Hamster took the liberty of making the situation a bit more serious in the switch. (It feels more like Gabriel than it’s apparent source series) In this case, the main character is an effeminate boy who gets picked on by the other boys at school and by his little sister. As a result, he ends up willingly taking the opportunity to transform into a girl.

Of course, what sort of magical transformation would be complete without a mascot? Of course, I doubt this uncouth flying rabbit (His name is Rambler, by the way) would appreciate you calling him that, so just stick to “faerie of the ribbon” if you need a title. 😛

As with Space Pirate Hamster’s other stuff of this nature, I quite like it. It’s really too bad that he’s apparently fallen off the web because it’d be nice to see more of it.

Fanfiction – The Power The Dark Lord Knows Of

The Power The Dark Lord Knows Of by Finbar

Length: Oneshot
Sources: Harry Potter
Rating: 5/5

Today’s fic is a silly one. Just how powerful is a prophecy? Powerful enough to continually grant Harry a new “power he knows not” as he keeps telling Voldemort what they are? This is great for a laugh, but too short for me to say much else. Definitely a very memorable idea though.

Lair Improvement – Desk Baskets

Have you ever wished you had a nice little basket hanging off your desk to store things like pens, notepads, vitamin D tablets, and so on without cluttering up the desk itself? If so, read on.

My desk is made of scrap lumber and I don’t mind drilling a couple of holes in it, but I understand that not everybody will feel the same, so I’ll provide two sets of instructions.

First, for a strong basket on a desk made of real wood:

  • One wireframe drawer organizer ($1 at my local dollar store)
  • Two #8×1½" flat-head wood screws
  • Two #10 stainless steel flat washers
  • A 1/8" drill bit and drill
  • An appropriate screwdriver

Simply drill two holes in the side of your desk, slide the washers onto the screws to prevent the basket from falling off, and screw the basket in place.

Now, for the recipe for metal or particle board desks: (Note: I haven’t actually tested this, but I don’t see why it won’t work)

  • One wireframe drawer organizer ($1 at my local dollar store)
  • Two 4" metal corner braces
  • Appropriate paired nuts and bolts (possibly with washers)
  • Double-sided foam tape

Simply bolt the braces to the drawer organizer and then use the foam tape to attach the braces to the top of the desk. You can then put your computer (or some other object which sits on little feet) over them to hide them from sight.

Fanfiction – The Marriage

The Marriage by Janara

Length: Oneshot
Sources: Harry Potter
Rating: 5/5

Remember all those “Harry gets bonded to someone” fics you had to wade through? Fancy a parody? “The Marriage” is a funny little oneshot where, when Dumbledore tries to magically bond Harry to Snape, Harry outwits him and magically bonds Dumbledore to Voldemort. Humor ensues.

Focus on Fanfiction – Original Characters

Anyone who takes more than a casual interest in fanfiction has almost certainly hear the term "fanon". For those who are unaware, "fanon" refers to elements which have become so popular that people start forgetting their non-canonical status.

However, as any self-declared fanfic critic (myself, for example) will quickly tell you, being "fanon" is an indication of popularity but says nothing for the quality of the idea. In at least half of the cases I’ve seen, fanon traits are a sort of "say it ain’t so" response by fanfiction authors who, whether consciously or unconsciously, band together in their self-delusion. (Easily differentiated from "alternate universe" fiction by the question "does the story pretend to take place in the original universe?")

So today, I’ll make mention of two characters who are of excellent quality, but don’t count as "fanonical" because they are quite blatant divergences from canon.

Mr. Black

First, in the Harry Potter fandom, we have Mr. Black created by Rorschach’s Blot. Is he an ex-dark lord, possibly the incarnation of death itself, or is he just a guy on vacation as he claims? As anyone who has read the fic knows, he’s just Harry Potter trying to take a vacation.

One of the best indicators of the quality writing that went into "Make A Wish" is the flurry of little sidestories written by it’s fans. Off the top of my head, I can think of only one other fanfic which has done this and it’s definitely not suitable for children. However, it’s author is probably the most famous fanfic author in all the early fandoms.

Toltiir, The Bet, and more…

Whether you know him as Metroanime, Kestral, Gregg Sharp, or by another alias, the author of "The Bet" is an icon in the Ranma ½ fanfiction community and, though his fiction rarely strays from anime, it has influenced the minds of many of today’s best fanfic authors.

For those unfamiliar with "The Bet", here’s the summary.: In 1998, Gregg Sharp posted a flurry of mini-fics to the FFML (FanFiction Mailing List) which was, at the time, the place to find and share fanfiction. While "Featherbrite’s Tale" won and got extended, the other mini-fics were also quite enjoyable. These events spurred a flood of "unofficial bet entries" and, though almost unheard of, you occasionally find a new one written in nostalgic memory.

To finally get back on track, The Bet introduced an original character so appealing and well-done that it usually takes quite a while for newcomers to realize he’s original. That character is Toltiir, cat god of chaos.

Unfortunately, as with his other original characters, I just don’t know how to describe Toltiir without doing a great injustice. You’ll just have to read The Bet yourself.

Linux Tools – incron, the “File-Change Cron”

incron :: inotify cron system

As a technically-minded Linux user, I’m very familiar with the cron daemon. However, like any good UNIX/Linux tool, it does one job and does it well: Running things at specific times. It’s of no use to me for tasks which should be run when a file or directory changes.

Thankfully, I just discovered "incron". The "inotify cron system". inotify is a Linux kernel feature added in the last year or so which allows programs to monitor files and folders for various events with minimal overhead and incron takes advantage of that to provide a simple way to run tasks in response. As another nice design feature, incron is designed to be as familiar to cron users as possible.

It’s still a little rough (for example, you can’t put comments into your incrontab and it won’t resolve ~ to mean your homedir), but all-in-all, a useful and nifty little tool.
