Anime – Tenshi na Konamaiki

For those who are unaware, I originally gained an interest in anime, manga, and fanfiction because Ranma ½ was a gender-bending story. At the time, I was obsessed with the inherent possibilities for character interaction, character development, and humor. (I still am to some extent)

However, shortly after discovering Ranma ½, I discovered another anime that had just began to be fansubbed. (You may be wondering why it took me so long to write about it. The answer is that I only just found time to watch the last four episodes today) Since then, the manga has been licensed for North American distribution under the name “Cheeky Angel” (in fact, I own the first 6 volumes), but the anime remains unlicensed, which is a real shame since some of the jokes in the anime cannot translate to a non-animated medium. (As a side-note, the manga is apparently longer, but I have yet to buy the whole thing, so I wouldn’t know)

For those who have never read the manga, it’s about a boy named Amatsuka Megumi (Yes, I know it’s a girl’s name) who got turned into a girl 6 years before the story starts when a little demon offered a wish and then purposefully misheard the “man” in “manliest man in the world”, resulting in a change so vast that only Megumi’s best friend Miki remembers what used to be. Naturally, Megumi isn’t too pleased.

Throughout this comedy, Megumi builds a collection of allies comprising of:

  • Genzo, The stupid but immensely strong ex-bully
  • Fujiki, The notably normal and mundane guy
  • Yasuda, The proud pervert
  • Kobayashi, the samurai figure

In general, the story revolves around their interactions with Megumi, Miki, and various other characters. (Some of whom go to the same high school)

I won’t say more, because I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but I will say that the anime makes excellent use of the anime medium, it’s a good comedy, and the ending is excellent, matching all of the points in my checklist:

  • The final episode’s credits should use a different piece of music than normal ending theme in order to avoid feeling anti-climactic.
  • If possible, ending themes should be different for each episode (eg. Fushigi Yuugi), but failing that, the final episode’s credits should at least be overlaid on the epilogue.
  • The story ending shouldn’t completely tie everything up. That’s not to say that things should be left unfinished, but rather, the story should end on a note where you feel that there’s more. For example, Fushigi Yuugi’s ending leaves the promise of a new untold romance despite closing all of the story threads that I can remember existing. What really surprises me is that any stories exist which break this particular rule.

…as well as satisfying my personal preferences as to how characters should act.

Anyway, since it’s still unlicensed, you can’t buy translated DVDs, so grab a torrent from the Anime-Empire section of the ScaryWater tracker. (As of this writing, it’s the second item from the bottom)

Fanfiction – Sexual Endeavours

Sexual Endeavours by Ichinohei Hitomi

Anyone who reads a lot of Ranma and Sailor Moon fanfiction will agree that there are very few Ranma “fukufics” where Ranma becomes a magical girl voluntarily. In fact, most people will point to only three really good ones:

  1. The Best of Times by Ozzallos (Where Ranma infiltrates the senshi using a tailored costume, the Gekkaja and Kinjakan, and his skils in order to learn more about Sailor Pluto, the woman who is responsible for his never having a moment’s peace)
  2. Relatively Absent by Togashi Gaijin (Where Ranma becomes the new Sailor Pluto in exchange for not dying in the collapse of Mount Horai and finds that the numerous job perks (eventual curse control, teleporting, effortless dimensional pocket clothing storage, etc.) probably make up for the embarassment after all)
  3. PARAGON by Kenko (Where Ranma accepts the mantle of a non-cutesy magical girl known as the paragon in exchange for control of his curse)

Now, what would you say if I told you that I’ve found a fourth, where Ranma voluntarily uses his own skills and a sexplay costume to mimic magical girl transformations and powers “until she can get some real ones”, without it seeming stupid? Think I’m crazy yet? Maybe I am, but that doesn’t make the fic any less excellent.

It’s rare to find a fic good enough to seamlessly permute one thing into another. It’s even more rare to find a fic which uses such a funny concept.

First, the fic starts out fairly innocently with Ranma mistaking reality for a dream because the prior day’s events lead to Nerima’s first “normal” day in all the time Ranma was there. (no Shampoo, sedate Ukyo, sedate Akane, no Kunos) He immediately cuts loose, scaring everybody who was fooled by his “I’m only a genius when it comes to Martial Arts” act. It gets to the point where Akane and Nabiki are convinced he must be a clone with the real Ranma having been kidnapped.

After School, Nodoka drops by and decides to test Ranma’s aversion to his female form. Ranma, thinking it’s still a dream, partly because of how Nodoka decided to test him, ends up acting out the female lead’s part in an RPG he’s working on as a Juku school group project. During their shopping trip, Nodoka takes Ranma to a sex toy shop, and Ranma ends up deciding to also purchase an “outfit”.

Upon Ranma’s return, Ryoga (who arrived at the dojo in the meantime) decides that the effeminate Ranma must mean he wandered into an alternate dimension. He plays along in order to avoid arousing suspicion.

The next morning, Ranma realizes it isn’t a dream, but after thinking back over everyone’s behaviour the day before, comes to the conclusion that “she” is the only one left unaffected by some mass mind-control spell, and that trying to become a magical girl is the best bet for stopping it.

Meanwhile, the girls are conversing and decide that Ranma has snapped, possibly as a delayed reaction from having to kill Saffron, the wedding fiasco, the loss of the nannichuan cask, the constant martial arts challenges, and having the constant pressure of a lose-lose honor-agreement quagmire.

Of course, it’s at this point that a crime lord decides that, since “super powers” can’t possibly exist, Nerima is the perfect place to start expanding his empire. 😛 (As a side-note, I should point out that Nuku-Nuku’s existence was mentioned in passing by Cologne)

From that point on, things just keep slipping. The only other fic I can think of that employs a similar transformation is Otaku Three by Jared Ornstead where his well-written self-insert, Skysaber, coerces Evangelion into a sentai series.

Trust me when I say that this story is one big hilarious cascade of misunderstandings and assumptions. I rate it 5.5/6. (For those who aren’t familar with my rating system, 6/6 requires that I re-read the fic at least once)

A Plea For Standards, Sanity, and Openness

Please Use Standards, Sanity, and Open Formats

I finally got around to starting my own (much more generalized) equivalent to various “MS Word is not a document interchange format” rants I’ve run across over the years. Give it a look. You may find a new favorite tool.

SDL and TwinView

Anyone who has ever used an SDL application on an X11-based GUI with nVidia TwinView (most Linux users with an nVidia video card and two monitors) has probably been bitten by this one once or twice… With nVidia TwinView, fullscreen SDL apps size themselves correctly, but center themselves across the entire desktop, rather than just one screen.

I haven’t had a chance to test this workaround, but it comes highly recommended and I’ll try it out as soon as I can find a chance to restart my X server.

  1. Find/add the TwinView MetaModes Option line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add an entry that has NULL as one of the values. For example, if your existing line is:
    Option "MetaModes" "1024x768, 1024x768"
Then the new line would be:
    Option "MetaModes" "1024x768, 1024x768; 1024x768,NULL"
  2. Restart your X server
  3. When your game appears centered across both monitors, press Ctrl+Alt+Plus (the plus key) and X will switch to a video mode where one monitor is disabled. SDL will re-center the drawing window and you’ll be good to go.

UPDATE: Over 4 years later, I’ve ended up listing alternatives to letting the game play with your resolutions.

Gender-Bent Teen Titans

TTGB: Secret Santa Poem

I’ve been enjoying these fancomics for a while, but I always kept forgetting to share them. Now, I’ve got the perfect opportunity. After all, who could possibly resist the fun of seeing the teen titans as if they’d always been swapped?

The best of both worlds

For the record, the title of this post refers to the combination of an American song and a Japanese comic… not that I’m not also messing with you, as you’ll see when you start reading. Now, with that out of the way, on with the post…

First, a little something I’ve been meaning to post for a couple of months and I keep forgetting about: Boku no Futatsu no Tsubasa

One of the myriad fetishes which can be found in adult comics in Japan is what I will call “full-function hermaphrodites” (people who appear to be women, but have both sets of genitals. This differs from the medical term “hermaphrodite” because it’s genetically impossible for a single mutation to produce two fully-functional reproductive systems in a single body)

Anyway, I suppose you can kind of understand how that would appeal to some people. The reason that this manga is sheer genius is that, instead of being some cheap excuse for naughty pics, the author managed to come up with a “why didn’t I think of that!?” plot concept… What would a female main character do if her (supposedly male) cousin was invited over to co-habitate, and the cousin turned out to not only be a fully-functioning hermaphrodite (and a real bombshell), but (instead of being a sex machine) is naive to the point of never even having had rudimentary sex education?

The answer: One of the funniest legal-for-teen-buyers comedies that I’ve ever seen as an average Japanese girl ends up having to provide a two-gender sex education for her cousin who has ZERO sex education. (doesn’t even know what words like “masturbation” mean “virgin”, or where babies come from)

Add to that, the fact that the characters don’t fall into the same tired old stereotypes you see throughout manga, and it makes for one of my newest all-time favorites. If you’d like to give it a try, the manga’s name once again is Boku no Futatsu no Tsubasa (Translation: My Two Wings) and you can get scanlations from DummyScan. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Now, you may be wondering, “How the heck is he going to connect a Japanese sitcom comic about a hermaphrodite to something from the U.S.?” Very easily…

Music by Stephen Lynch

If you’ve never seen this guy, you don’t know what you’re missing. For a first on my blog, I’ll embed a copy of the video to his song “Hermaphrodite
(which, for the record, is the song that reminded me to make this post)

Interestingly, this is actually the third song I’ve heard by this guy. The first was If I Could Be A Superhero which I saw in a clip from AMV Hell 3 and the second was Lullaby, sometimes called “Why Mommy Left Us”.

Happy Holidays

To anyone who reads this, happy holidays. Hopefully, I’ll have time during the break to whip up a few programs to share.

As it is, I do have a few improvements to announce. First, I’ve set up a nice new cocktail of anti-spam tools that’s working out wonderfully. (A mix of Akismet, Spam Karma 2, and Bad Behaviour)

Second, I’ve installed Rudd-O’s XHTML validator and my site is now completely XHTML valid, and will stay that way.

Third, I installed a plugin named Sociable, so if you view any of my posts individually, you get that nice little row of icon-links to social bookmarking sites.

Finally, I decided to treat myself too, and I’ve installed a dashbar plugin so I can get to the posting page more quickly since I haven’t had time to get bookmarklet-compatible Javascript enabled in Konqueror.

Oh, and I’ll be adding the following once I have time to fix what seem to be incompatibilities with WordPress 2.x:

  • Dropdown Archives – So you don’t have to scroll so much.
  • Custom Contact – So you can have a contact form in the blog proper.
  • WP Default Post Content – To reduce the amount of effort each post requires.
